About Ballardvale

The village of Ballardvale can be found within Andover, which is part of Essex County in the state of Massachusetts. It has grown steadily since the 19^th century thanks to the presence of mills along Shawsheen River, and has become a historical district which features various forms of classical architecture with a strong industrial heritage.

This village is named in honor of the family of Ballard who came here during the 1800s and took advantage of the local water power to construct saw mills and other manufacturing facilities. They founded a company called Ballardvale Manufacturing which became the first in the U.S. to develop wool worsted and wool flannel. This success led to the construction of additional mills that were used to assemble shoes, stoneware and even carriages.
