Replacing windshield wipers on a GMCÂ is a pretty easy job. You'll need to remove the wiper blade, buy new ones compatible with your car, and attach them in place of the old ones. The whole process shouldn't take more than 20 minutes or so if you already have these tools and supplies handy:
Turn The Wipers Off
To turn the wiper blades off, you must first turn the ignition to the off position. Next, press and hold your vehicle's wiper stalk for about five seconds. After a few moments, the wipers should stop moving. If they don't stop after five seconds of holding down the stalk button, try again until they do. If you still have trouble with this step, consult with a technician at your local GMC dealer as soon as possible so they can help troubleshoot any problems that may be causing issues with your wipers' operation.
Locate The Wiper Arm
To replace the wiper blades, you need to be able to locate the wiper arm. You can find it by looking at the arm currently attached to the windshield and ensuring it matches what you see in your car. It is important to note how this part works because it may be challenging to figure it out on your own if you do not know how something like this works.
Mark or tape the windshield with a K pencil or other marker to show where it is safe to make contact without breaking.
If you don't have a K pencil, tape or some other marker is an excellent alternative. You will want to mark the wiper arm so you can see where it is safe to make contact with the windshield without breaking it. Make sure the piece of tape or pencil will not damage the windshield and doesn't interfere with anything on your car, such as airbags or seatbelts (if applicable). When marking your windshield, keep several places so that if one starts coming off while doing this job, others are still there for guidance.
Remove The Cover
The first thing you'll need to do is remove the cover. Typically, windshield wiper covers are held in place by either a clip or a screw. If they're held on with a screw, take out your head screwdriver and loosen it to remove it completely. If yours has a clip, pull up on it until it releases from underneath the frame of your car and set it aside for later use (we'll explain why shortly).
Pry The Hook Off Of The Link
To pry the hook off the link, you will need to use either a screwdriver or a rubber mallet. You should not use any other tools for this step as it may damage your car.
Next, unplug the electrical connector at the wiper motor assembly and disconnect the rubber grommet from around the cable. This will give you more room before you need to get into that tight space behind your car's cowl (the front hood area where all of your wipers are).
Pull The Old Wiper Blade Off Of The Arm
Once you've done this, use pliers or another tool to grab onto one end of each bolt and pull outwards until they come free from their holes in the arm-you may want someone else helping you with this step so that no one gets hurt!
Clean The Area Where The New Blade Will Sit
It's important to clean the area where you are going to install the new wiper so that it will sit properly. Clean the windshield using a damp cloth to remove any dirt, grime, or bugs that may have accumulated on your windshield. If there is any debris under your wipers, it could cause them to squeak once they're replaced.
Insert A New Wiper Arm
Insert the new wiper arm into the slot. You may have to use a screwdriver or other tool to get it in place, but if you do that, make sure that you don't force it so hard that you damage either part of the assembly.
If you have any issues during this process, take a moment and look over the process again before moving forward with any repairs or replacements.
